Diary of an Otome Newbie

I have been a long time video game lover since the early 1980s. The first game I remember playing was Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventures in the Park. Since then my preference has been Role-Playing Games (RPGs) and Fighting Games and then I was introduced to the world of otome. 🤯

So, what is an “otome game?” I won’t bastardize the history of otome and instead will suggest insight from someone more knowledgeable than me. BlerdyOtome has a great beginner’s guide on her site: A Beginners Guide to Otome Games: Part 1 “What Are Otome Games?!” Check it out. I LOVE romance, whether it’s in book form, a movie, or whatever. To me, these are like the game version of a “choose your adventure” romance book. As the main character, you are given a selection of Love Interests (LIs) to choose from and woo.

I wasn’t sure if I would like these types of games at the beginning so I dipped my toe in the cheapest way possible. This past November, I downloaded my first otome game: Ikémen Vampire: Temptation in the Dark. IkéVamp (as it’s known by fans) is a free-to-play mobile app game. You romance pretty, historical men who’ve been brought back to life as vampires. YUP! I’ll save my breakdown of that for a later day, but needless to say I was hooked. I immediately ordered Piofiore: Fated Memories and BUSTAFELLOWS as Christmas gifts and downloaded Voltage’s Love 365 app. When I fall, I fall hard. 😅

Since then I have learned that there are SO MANY otome games available for the Switch, the eShop sales are sometimes hard to resist, and upcoming game announcements are the debul!!! 🤪

My favorite LIs are quiet, stoic, and sarcastic types. Sass me and I’ll sass you back. I inherently don’t trust the ones who are so happy and friendly off the bat. They have something to hide and will mix you up in borderline illegal stuff. 😂

Currently, I need to finish the routes in BUSTAFELLOWS, start Variable Barricade, and try to NOT preorder everything that Aksys Games is releasing this fall. 😅

Before I go, here’s a list of the otome games that I own:

Are there any others that you suggest this newbie try out? Leave a comment and let me know.

  1. 10/10 recommend Collar X Malice! Its available for Switch and there is already a fan disc out (Collar X Malice Unlimited and its probably my number one favorite for story, MC and LIs. There was only one LI I wasn’t a fan of, and he wasn’t bad so much as mildly annoying lol That being said his route was still fun to play through.
